With time and dedication, Shetty became a boxing champion and won tournaments for eight years. He came to be known as the undefeated boxing champion of Bombay. Shetty started his career as a body double for actors Pradeep Kumar and Premnath.

He had four children: two daughters and two sons named Hriday Shetty, a filmmaker, and Uday Shetty with her. Then he married Ratna Shetty, an actress. He met Ratna when she was a junior artist with whom he had daughters Chanda, Chaya and Mahek Shetty and a son, Rohit Shetty, who is now a film director in the Hindi film industry.
